MMO Setting

By Setting, of course, I mean the context of the game, the IP... Warcraft's lore, the Tolkien Middle Earth, Norrath, super heroes, cartoons, Conan, Warhammer, generic deep space, Star Trek, Star Wars... Film Noir? Horror? What else is out there? What else could be out there?

1. What is one setting for an MMO that you have not seen done that you want to see done?
2. What is one setting for an MMO that you have not seen done that you never want to see done?
3. What is one setting for an MMO that you have played/seen that you wish they'd hadn't tried?

Genre doesn't matter really unless it's fun, but the one game I'd LOVE to see is a twitch based space sim game. EVE is horrid.

Interestng topic.

1) Dragonlance. Yes, it's campy but it could still make a good setting.

2) Girly stuff.

3) Can't think of anything right now.

I love the dragonlance series and world. Would make a cool MMO, but do you think the memorization spell system would work in an MMO?

1. Post-apocalyptic, definitely, Fallout has a certain flavor that would work well. The genre has a certain community survival aspect that would work well in an MMO. Steampunk, provided you had some mechanism for airships and maybe air combat.

2. Sports or theological based ones. The first would be dull, the 2nd couldn't be done without offending one segment or another, or most likely, everyone.

3. N/A

2. American Idol MMO
3. SWG (like the IP, shame about the game.)

Not sure if a memorization system would work out well in an MMO, instead perhaps you could have spell fatigue. Each game night at midnight you are "refreshed", but as you cast spells it drains your fatigue. Higher level you go, the more fatigue you will have.

I'd so be a black robe though. :)

Does this work differently than Mana?
I cringe at the thought of a memorization system. It was a good start as an infrastructure for spell casting (back in the late '70s), but it doesn't make a lot of sense (you 'forget' your spell after you cast it? what?), and at a gameplay level, is a royal pain in the ass.
I did like the lore in Dragonlance though. Floating citadels in an MMO would be awesome.

Not just floating citadels but:

> dragon mounts guaranteed.
> dragon to dragon combat
> races: humans, kender, elf, dwarf, draconian just to rattle off 5 solid races.
> cool locations: Xak Tsaroth, Solace, Thorbardin & Life Tree, Neraka, Blood Sea of Istar (underwater dungeon mebbe?)
> factions: dragonarmies, solamnia, etc

So many cool things

1. What is one setting for an MMO that you have not seen done that you want to see done?
>> The A-Team! Start out in the jungles of Vietnam early on, then later on group up with a few others to help out someone through a challenge they're facing. Could even set up some PVP-like encounters where one side is the A-Team and the other are the bad guys trying to take over the mine/ docks/ someone's business. (Watch out for the MPs on the missions!) Though, the repetative quests to break Murdok out of the loony bin or drugging Mr. T so they can fly from one location to another might be tedious  Too bad there isn't much lore behind that, though perhaps that's a good thing?

I really liked the concept of a Highlander MMO - loved the TV series - but it does bring up that whole perma-death thing.

2. What is one setting for an MMO that you have not seen done that you never want to see done?
>> Any sort of hospital-based show (how many hundreds have there been between daytime & primetime?)

3. What is one setting for an MMO that you have played/seen that you wish they'd hadn't tried?
>> By far, SWG. Great potential, but much failure.

Classic sci-fi, like Heinlein's Space Cadet books and Andre Norton's Space Trader books. It's tramp steamers in space, academies and cadets, blasters and aliens, trading and dealing on planets for profit, and above all - cool ass rockets that land on FINS like they are supposed to!

A good Steampunk MMO. An original Science-Fantasy MMO.

2. What is one setting for an MMO that you have not seen done that you never want to see done?
None.

Motor City Online and Auto Assault, because I swear you CAN make a good car themed MMO, but two failures in that setting will make another unlikely for a while.
